Index for Word of God

Postby Black_Mantha » Sat Oct 23, 2010 8:59 am

I thought I'd make an index for all the times the creators have shared information on the boards which isn't readily available from the comic. If anyone knows a post they would like to see added, please PM me, and if it contains some solid information, I'll add it. Keeps the thread from getting cluttered and disorganized.

Kris@WLP wrote:First, "word of god" in these forums may be overridden by actual comic releases.

Second, "word of god" is only definite when it comes from the writer- that is, me. I try not to contradict BAR-1 on the boards when he and I disagree, but what he says and what the story and background for the story call for aren't always the same thing.

I'd suggest making this a sticky. I know that I've tried to scour the board archives for at least one of the posts indexed here.
"The Blessing and the Curse" - A coming-of-age story involving a young man on the brink of self-destruction finding love in a most unexpected way.

Two things.

First, "word of god" in these forums may be overridden by actual comic releases.

Second, "word of god" is only definite when it comes from the writer- that is, me. I try not to contradict BAR-1 on the boards when he and I disagree, but what he says and what the story and background for the story call for aren't always the same thing.

While we're bringing these subjects up, I had a couple of questions. Both were brought up in the past but never really answered.

1) What's the general lycanthrope stand on homosexuality? Compared to humans in the same areas, are they tolerated more/less/about the same?

2) What would the protocol be in the case of a human and a lycanthrope falling in love? Obviously, consummating the relationship would be impossible without creating a thrall.

(1) Not significantly different than that of the society in which they live, except perhaps for a bit more tolerance of all sexuality in general.

(2) There is no protocol for such a thing, really.

So, there's no official stand on it, or it's never happened so the subject has never been breached?

(Granted, Peter's relationship with Sarah started as a were-human one, but I'm referring more to one where the were knows that sex with humans is out of the question, and the human may or may not already be in on the secret.)

Well I kinda just registered for this question

Do werewolves regeneration work against them with cancer? since cancer is when normal cell regeneration goes haywire

I also have to thank you i'm planning to be a writer someday and your webcomic spurred my imagination on the whole lycan theme which i was planning of removing from my fantasy world building project

Cancer is not something werewolves have to worry about- at least not until the old-age final collapse of regeneration.

Wouldn't the cancer cells spread more troughly since cancer cells are the ones that lost suicide gene and disrupt normal cells working?

Unless the regeneration is constant on a genetic level which is kinda of a handwavium troope but meh

So now i ask if regeneration does work on a genetic level or not?, because regeneration itself is what causes cancer, overproducing stem cells to substitute the old ones maybe?

Lycanthropic regeneration functions on a level far beyond natural regenerative mechanisms, which usually involve directing undifferentiated cells (stem cells) to the damange and activating factors that control growth in the embryo. I'm not even going to try to justify/explain how it might work biologically.

Most cancers in the body develop in tissues with high rates of cell growth. Primary brain tumors, for example usually result from glial or meninges cells (many of which replicate constantly) as opposed to neurons (which do not, generally speaking replicate at all). By this logic the whole freakin' werewolf is one big potential tumor. My guess is, since werewolves can and do get sick, their immune system is VERY good at keeping pathogens out and destroying those that do get by. By the same token it must be very good at recognizing and destroying potentially cancerous cells before they form a tumor and metastaticize. Of course, a "it's magic" or "quantum mechanics" hand wave is just as good.

We're getting pretty deep into the main question I don't intend to provide an answer to- "How Does Lycanthropy Actually Work?"

Nobody in Peter's world really has any good answer- nothing provable. However, they do know from long observation that cancer is only an issue when regeneration is playing out, which usually doesn't happen until old age.

Re: Index for Word of God

Postby Kris@WLP » Fri Jun 13, 2014 9:30 am

I'm bringing this post to the top so I can sticky it for future reference.

While I'm doing that, I think I'll issue some Word of God on the current PitW page at TVTropes.

"Didn't See That Coming": Con Nero wasn't in the least displeased about Murray's opposition. He only wanted the video so he could bury it, so Murray's deletion worked just fine for him. Note the smile where Murray can't see it in the last panel of that exchange.

"Freaky is Cool": First, when Sarah visits Tiki-Li-Li's, there are no patrons, only employees. Carol and the fry cook are scared from the start and never really change. Brooke is thrilled after a few cautious moments. Murray, the manager, is thinking about nothing more than publicity to boost his sales. (The place Tiki's is based on IRL may do a brisk business, but Tiki-Li-Li's is a bit marginal at the start of Book 3 and needs the help.)

"Involuntary Shapeshifting": It's not "all but impossible to stay human during the full moon", but it does require continued concentration. Peter's very bad at it by were standards.

"Ma'am Shock": This isn't really a Berzerk Button for Jean: she was using it to keep Lee Stebbins distracted. It was an acting job.

Obstructive Code of Conduct: Actually Archie Hunt blackmailed both sides. It's the only way that sort of thing could work.

Well-Intentioned Extremist: Actually, the pack in the thrall-horror-story FAILED to take down the thrall in question.
