Submissions Guidelines
At this time, White Lightning Productions is reviewing submissions for portfolios, comics, and text article material. White Lightning Productions currently publishes an adult anthology comic series called BOOTLEG, WLP inhouse projects such as The Magnificent Milkmaid, and creator-owned comic series and art portfolios. WLP is especially interested at this time in general-audience submissions, so don't be shy to suggest them. We are not interested in color books. However, at this time, we -are- reviewing submissions for black-and-white comic series. *** WHAT TO SUBMIT *** Click here if you are submitting text. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING TO WLP UNASKED FOR VIA THE INTERNET. WLP is severely prejudiced against anyone so rude as to send 300K image files in email attachments, and we do not often have the time or patience to check out your web site, especially if it is on Tripod or Geocities or if it uses frames. PLEASE send your submissions by snailmail or send an email asking before you send any email submission. WLP will only consider *COMPLETED* artwork or text news or feature articles for publication. We do NOT accept or even review scripts, sample pencils or uncompleted pages. Any comic series or miniseries must have at least the first issue completed and ready for printing. All comic art must be proportional to the standard Modern Age comic size (6 5-8" X 10 1/4"). Each issue must be more than 22 pages in length and must have all artwork completed before mailing to WLP. WLP will not hire inkers, toners, or any other freelance personnel for any purpose besides coloring cover art. WLP -will- edit your work for spelling and re-letter it if your lettering is not up to par. Any additional editorial changes will be discussed between creator and editor; however, WLP takes a hands-off approach to all editorial decisions. WLP is looking for the following types of content:
WLP will AUTOMATICALLY REJECT any of the following material, on sight:
How to Submit Your Work The submission must consist of the following:
PAYMENT IF ACCEPTED White Lightning Productions offers no advances on royalties from publication of any comic work. Comics For a comic published for the comic direct market, WLP offers a royalty schedule based on the initial wholesale orders of the issue. Relists and reprints of that issue will earn royalties based on the initial percentage for that issue. The percentage is of -wholesale sales,- not retail value; on average, wholesale price for a comic is $1.00.
The above is a base rate: certain creators may be offered more based on the quality of their work. Minimum royalty for an adults-only title is 20%. For Bootleg submissions, contributors will be paid a by-page share of the royalties above. (Ads will not be counted as pages for dividing shares.) Cover art is worth two shares, or four shares if the artist colors it; comic stories are one share per page, pinups recieve 2/3 share (but are counted as one page for dividing share). Guaranteed minimum payout is $50 for a colored cover, $25 for lineart cover, $12/pg for comic story, $8 for a pinup. In addition, the creator (or creators) will recieve fifty copies of the comic. Portfolios For an art portfolio, WLP pays half of all profits from sales after cost of printing per portfolio. WLP reserves the right to set the price on these portfolios. The creator also gets five copies of that portfolio for their own use. TERMS OF CANCELLATION If a non-adult direct-market comic falls below a wholesale sales level of 1,250 comics, all subsequent issues of that comic will be cancelled, but solicited comics will be printed. If it falls below 1,000 copies, that issue only will be printed. If it falls below 800 copies, the issue will not be printed at all. If a color comic falls below a wholesale sales level of 6000 copies, the series will either be cancelled or converted to black and white. WLP will accept -completed- text submissions for its anthology Bootleg and for future use in a hoped-for anime-manga news magazine. As of this time, WLP is not looking at comic scripts; our artist stable is far too small to even attempt to match artists with writers. WLP reserves the right to edit, spellcheck, butcher, maul, and otherwise rework any submitted text article. If you don't want it touched, don't send it. All edits will be submitted to the original creator before publishing. Email submissions should be in plain ASCII text; paper submissions should be typed and double-spaced, single-sided pages, with the submitter's name and address on the back of each page. CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE If your work is accepted for publication as a direct-market comic, your original artwork, along with cover art, will be requested; if accepted for any other application, the photocopies submitted should be sufficient. It may take as long as six months for any accepted work to see print; be patient. DO NOT ASK FOR UPDATES OR CONFIRMATION OF RECIEPT OF SUBMISSIONS. We will contact YOU once your submission has been reviewed. All submissions should be sent to: WHITE LIGHTNING PRODUCTIONS Email us with any other questions! |
